Four Theaters
In the 1920’s movies were new and part of neighborhoods. The theaters were built for vaudeville and the new medium, film. These were not the fancy downtown palaces. Nevertheless, modest in the time before mass production included hand done woodwork. plush seats and wonderful plaster detailing. While the four places in Cleveland I photographed had not shown a film in a long time, the structures survived and were all part of community development plans. One, The Capitol, in what was to become my new neighborhood, was in the process of major renovation and today is back showing films. These theaters were from a time when entertainment was still public (and affordable.)
